Lipstick Lesbian Tales #6: Student Body (Excerpt)
For the past decade, I’ve taught English as a Second Language, often referred to as ESL. Teaching foreign students demands a lot from an instructor; not only must I cover vocabulary and grammar, but I have to bridge cultural differences that separate educator from learner. It’s an arduous task.
After a brief stint in South Korea, culture shock forced me to return to the United States after a single year abroad. I landed a job at a local community college where their ESL classes attracted Korean students from around the city.
ESL classes often happen in the evening after college students return home. Most times, I have one or two pupils in my class because of lack of interested—perhaps a transplanted businesswoman from Seoul or Daegu, or maybe an exchange student from Incheon or Busan. A few weeks ago, a new student joined my class.
I entered the classroom like any day. Ji-min sat in the middle of the room, alone. No other student bothered to attend. Immediately, Ji-min’s offbeat smirk and communicative eyes touched me. Typically, Korean women emphasize appearance, and this young lady’s immaculate style concealed an overt sensuality beneath the conservative facade. Ji-min’s body language rejected the typical customs and restrictive ideals of her culture by shirking the reserved standards in favor of a relaxed confidence. This forthrightness made me uncomfortable.
Ji-min sat braless.
A black halter top and skirt barely hid her athletic curves. Hairdressers had dyed her hair blonde and cut it long with severe bangs, a common trend in her country. Triangular facial proportions stressed her large round wire-framed glasses. A pleather jacket slung over her chair completed her distinctive metropolitan style.
I never find a woman attractive in the lesbian sense, but Ji-min challenged this norm. I prefer to play in the male arena, but her loveliness piqued my curiosity. A sexual tension filled the room as we exchanged glances and I sat my books on the large wooden desk near the head of the class. We swapped pleasantries in both languages as I readied my lesson. Our eyes connected again briefly. Her eyes deferred to me, as most Korean students do with teachers, but the gesture read like an act. Part of me wished for more students, but another part wondered where a solo lesson might lead.
Ignoring the sexual tension, I jumped into a grammar lecture about the active and passive voice. After a few moments, Ji-min frowned. She failed to seize the concept, so I elaborated. The more I explained, the more confused her expression became. Our eyes met again, but I quickly turned back to the board. After demonstrating more, I glanced back at her once again. Her frustrated eyes conveyed bewilderment, so I explained it more.
In a high-pitched voice that sounded more like an interrogation than a statement, she announced, “Seonsaengnim.”
I grimaced as I chided, “Let’s use English, please. And my name is Ms. Ellison.”
With her expressive eyes shining, she pouted, “Teacher.”
“Yes,” I answered calmly. My job involved fielding unnecessary questions. I waited for her, but thought, “I never get past the first point without a question. Never.”
Ji-min said, “I don’t understand your active.”
Without thinking, I giggled. Many times when non-native speakers try certain phrases without the proper syntax, it can amuse and bewilder.
Unable to understand what she intended, I asked, “My active?”
Ji-min realized her mistake, so she tried again. “I don’t understand your active voice.”
I smiled and said, “Excellent English, Ji-min.”
Her eyes beamed as she said, “Gamsahabnida…” I gave her a disapproving look. She added, “I mean, thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Ji-min.”
I turned back to the dry-erase board, put marker to surface, and waited for another question before I wrote the second point. She remained silent. Before I finished the sentence, her voice came from behind me.
“Teacher.”
I exhaled, turned, and said, “Yes, Ji-min.”
“I like your look.”
